What does an ingrown toenail look and feel like?

My toe has been irritating me since saturday. It's all red on the side of my big toe and also under the cutical. What should i do? I don't have insurance so I don't really want to go to the doctor. What does an ingrown toenail look and feel like?
An ingrowing toenail is (if you can picture this ) like a staple being pushed into the sides of the toe. A slightly curved toenail becomes like an inverted U.

Treatment is by washing the toe thoroughly then with a pair of sharp toenail clippers cutting a V in the top of the nail and then excising the affected side of the nail with the clippers but not drawing blood.

If it is really bad go to see your GP or chiropodist. in UK that is.What does an ingrown toenail look and feel like?
hi there

try to speak to someone at the hospital but a ingrown nail is that it grows inside the skin not outside and it hurts they have to put that part of the toe to sleep to dig inside and pull it out sometimes this happends when we cut our own toenails the wrong way. have it check out asap. It canget infected.

be well be safe

I had problems with ingrowns for many years as a result of wearing pointed high heels for years. I heard about that cutting a v in the center thing, and wound up getting a fungal infection, so don't do that. Try to trim the nail away in the corner. Maybe soaking your foot in hot salted water may help before the big trim. Make sure to cut your toe nails straight across in the future, and don't wear shoes that are too tight. Sandals for a few days can help also, to keep the pressure off the toe.
you,ll certainly know if you get one!
An ingrown toenail is bloody painful! The fact that the cuticle is involved and that it came on quite suddenly may mean a fungal infection. There are remedies you can buy over the counter from your pharmacist for this. Give that a try, and if symptoms persist Im afraid you will have to consult either your Doctor or a Chiropodist. Health is priceless, do what you can to ensure you have access to medical treatment. Good luck x
Buy hydrogen peroxide from the store, and pour a little at a time on your nail. You may also want to get some cotton balls and soak it in hydrogen peroxide and place it very wet on your toe and cover your cuticles as well. Hydrogen peroxide is a natural bacteria killer and you'll need it if you don't want it to get more infected than it is. A good antibiotic ointment (drugstore) applied afterwards with some gauze wrappings. You have to change the dressing at least a few times a day. This is what I would do if I can't go to the doctor.
Pink, Swallon and Painfull

It is only going to get worse.

Why dont you have insurance???????
If you have never dealt with this yourself before, you may have to go to a doctor. But I work on my own toes all the time. If it's an ingrown toenail, it will probably be as you describe, and the pain seems to be worse when you touch it on the red area. If you are able to touch it, you may even be able to feel where the toenail seems to keep growing into the skin beside the cuticle.

If it doesn't hurt too much, try clipping it and see if you can cut away some of the sore toenail. If you've never done this before, and you've let it go, it may be too sore, or you may need help to know what you're doing. You can also look for some over-the-counter products that may help to relieve the pain and swelling. Wear the loosest shoes you can and keep the area clean to prevent infection.
If it's an ingrown toenail you'll be able to see on the edge of your toe where it is growing into your skin. They hurt really bad. You'll be able to get it out yourself though. It'll hurt but will feel better after it's removed. You need to do it before it gets worse though. Email me if you need tips on removing it.
UGH.

ingrown toenails hurt like a mothatrucker.!!

just go buy something to life the nail outta the cutical. and cut it.

haha.

bite it.
sounds like an ingrown toe nail. I have heard that if you put a piece of dental floss in between the nail and the toe for a few hrs a day it is supposed to help take soem of the pressure off the toe. Go and get a pedicure (if it is not too bad), and they can usually cut it in a certain way to take care of it for you.

good luck with that.
Bloody sore. The old remedy was to cut a v in your nail
It's very painful . Anti Bacterial soap - Keep clean and dry
If it gets infected, it will also ooze pus and bleed if something bumps against it. Ignoring it will only make it worse, best to go to the doctor and get it fixed right away.
well you can go to your local store and find a ingrown toenail clipper and it come out with that. its also going to really hurt because it swollen to the point that it red and irritating
usually an ingrown toenail will get al red and it will be sore, some times swoolen..

I usually can tell if the spot hits or rubs on my shoe just right it will hurt like a bugger.

you dont need to go to a doctor for an ingrown toenail.

what i do is take toe nail clippers, cut the nail back so its real short(it hurts like a son of a gun to do it) especially in the spot thats in grown, and then I put anti biotic ointment on it and a bandaid
It is hard to say what it looks like..it is just nail growing under your toenail...I had one once and it hurt like hell to walk...so I cut it out, carefully.
Hi red... just wanted to say ,, that you have describe an in grown toe nail ... my mama suffered from that.. if you dont have insurance ... soak your foot in lukewarm water , for about twenty min. or more put sea breeze on it or numzie [tooth ache cream ] and it kinda num it and push the skin down as much as you can then clip your toe nail .. it will hurt some but after you clip it off you will feel relieve.. and if you cant work arrangement with a doctor and pay him as soon as you can... they are very painful and it wont get better until you get it clip ... my son had ingrown nails and the dr. clipped them and burned the root so they would never come back .. GOD BE WITH YOU ... yoli
it might be an ingrown toenail. What I have done in the past is soaked my toe...then cut down the nail. I cut my nail as far as I could and then ripped it off. The ingrown toenail cam with it. 1 week later i wa all better. Otherwise you might just have an infection. So soak your toe anyways in a lot of disinfecting liquids. Anything you can find helps.
