What is an easy but not too painful way to get rid of an ingrown toenail?

I have one, and it's getting all icky and covered in pus :// It hurts sooo bad just to wear shoes, but I've had like seven of them and i really do not want to go back to the doctor and get it taken out. The shot they give you is sooooo painful!!! Any tips?What is an easy but not too painful way to get rid of an ingrown toenail?
Using a topical cream before your appointment could help. It doesn't take away all the pain, but any little bit helps. I know how painful they can be!! Being it is pussing a little, you'd want to check to make sure the topical cream won't make things worse. My Mom had the sides of her toe nails removed (on her big toes only). She still has the majority of her toe nail, but they can no longer become ingrown. She said this was the best thing she's ever done! You can't even tell it's actually been done!
